The Japan Foundation, Manila conducts a wide range of activities in introducing the different facets of Japanese culture. “Addressing the K to 1`2 Curricular Enhancement in Philippine Education”

Date: January 19-21, 2012
Venue: Sison Auditorium, Lingayen, Pangasinan

An international conference – workshop that will enable the participants – basic education practitioners, researches, teachers, graduate students and other education stakeholders to contribute new knowledge, ideas and innovations for quality education.

The project aims to ensure the teachers’ capability and continuing development to successfully and productively achieve the goals for learning and teaching for K to 12 innovation; it will also provide working knowledge and information on global practices and perspectives.

The lecturer, Prof. Jacqueline Berndt is a Director in the School of Manga Studies, Kyoto Seika University. Her two (2) day lecture on Manga will be held on 9 September (Friday), 4:00 pm at the Ayala Museum in Makati and on 10 September (Saturday), 9:30 am at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo de Manila University in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

The Aesthetics of Kawaiisa (Cuteness) in Japanese Culture

This lecture attempts to surface the cultural, economic and political roots of the Japanese interest and obsession with objects perceived as “cute”. It will also discuss the resence of manga and anime characters as an indication of Japan being composed of cultures rather than culture.

Visual Syntagma of Japan’s Manga

This talk will be a discussion on the visual structure of Japanese Manga and attempts to discuss it’s visual narrative construct in visual semantics, syntax and pragmatics. History, characters, themes and narrative patterns are also examined.
