The Japan Foundation Lecture Series, 35th Session

The JF Manila Lecture Series is in pursuit of Japan Foundation’s objective of enhancing mutual understanding through the promotion of human exchange among those who seek professional encouragement, and further development in the field of Japanese Studies and Japanese Language Education in the Philippines.

This time, the lecturer - Ms. Alice Mary Itchon, who recently graduated with a Masters degree in Nihongo Education from Obirin University in Japan will do a presentation on “Japanese As A Heritage Language – A Case Study of The Japanese - Filipino Children in The Philippines”. The increase in the number of Japanese-Filipino marriages brings about the need for their children staying in the Philippines to study the Japanese language. However, language schools are not prepared for this type of learners - hence, the absence of a curriculum. Ms. Itchon will report on the current needs of these young learners – reasons/goals for studying the language, attitude towards Japanese language schools, ethnic identity, and parental involvement.

As there is a close relationship between the Philippines and Japan, it is certain that this issue will be significant in the near future. Ms. Itchon’s lecture will be an opportune time for Nihongo teachers to discuss and share ideas on the matter !

See you at the 35th Session of the JFM Lecture Series !
