  • International Conference on the Conservation and Popularization of Pangalay and Related Asian Dance Cultures

    The International Conference on the Conservation and Popularization of Pangalay and Related Asian Dance Cultures aims to foster international peace and cooperation among participating countries through the conservation and popularization of pangalay and related Asian dance cultures. It is organized by the AlunAlun Dance Circle, Inc., a non-profit organization established in 1999 and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is committed to the preservation of the pangalay dance style—the authentic Filipino dance style.

    During the four-day conference, various topics such as Theory and Practice of Ethnochoreology and Ethnomusicology in Asian Dance Conservation, Dance Education Theories in Asia, Traditional Minangkabau Dance of Indonesia, Pangalay as a Form of Colonial Resistance, Problems Encountered in Dance Conservation, and much more will be discussed and demonstrated by speakers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and the United States. Participants will also share their own experiences in dance preservation during the daily open fora. Approximately 100 participants are expected. Performances will be held every evening at different venues in Marikina, such as the Marikina Cultural Theater and the Roman Gardens by the Marikina River. An exhibit of costumes, props, ornaments and musical instruments used in dance performance to further establish cultural affinity among countries will be on display for the duration of the conference.
